Hi Everyone, Just a few things that could changed. Penguin Computing - http://penguincomputing.comI talked with them and they have desktop system that could be very useful to me. They are working up a quote for a Dual, Dual Core with 8gb of RAM. (expandable to 32gb!!)
I am not sure that they will come in at $1350 like the system I quoted below, but we shall see.
Does anyone have thoughts on buying a Penquin or maybe can recommend another vendor that sells Linux Friendly systems capable of at least 8GB of RAM? I used to own a Tadpole Notebook, but that maxed out at 2GB.
Thoughts? Jason Thomas Dimiduk wrote:
I am running a rather similar system: Athlon 64 x2 4600+, GeForce 6200 256mb, 21 in 1400x1050 Viewsonic LCD. different mainboard, not the huge ram or hard disk or wireless, on Fedora 7. Everything worked with a default install, no problems with X, and the 1400x1050 was supported with the Free drivers. I have never used in, but I think Fedora has good support for raid. The default 64 bit kernel for Fedora supports SMP (which you will want anyway since the 64 x2 is a dual core and that gets handled by SMP.I think vmware will run on any distro, the only one I have used in on is debian.I Hope this was helpful, Tom Dimiduk J. So a few questions/needs: 1. Any changes to this system to make it more linux friendly?2. What distro should I run? I have used Slackware in the past, but had trouble setting up X-Windows. I need a graphical desktop. 3. What if I added a second Athlon 64 x2 4200+ CPU (I dont know if this is possible, yet? anyone?), what distro would be best for SMP?4. I need to run VMWare Workstation 6.0 5. I want to run a nice resolution higher than 1024x7686. I develop software and working with a nice company where my new position is writing linux based applications in Qt and wxWidgets and we are also developing a utility like DiskWarrior (on OS X) that will run on Linux, Windows and OS X.Thoughts are appreciated.
