I'm a big fan and longtime happy customer of emusic.com . Songs are about 25
cents apiece (you pay a monthly fee for a certain number of downloads, which
disappear if you don't use them) and while they don't have a lot of Top 40
stuff, there's tons of great jazz, indie music, They Might Be Giants, etc.
Amazon is also an option - my husband downloaded a few tunes from them.
Pricier, but they have songs that emusic doesn't, and they don't require a
subscription.
Both services allow you to listen to a 30-second mp3/m3u sample before
committing to download a track.
