RE: HP Itanium Woes....

HP does *sell* a virtualization solution which, I believe, will run on your system. Although intended and priced for the server market, it allows you to run different environments on the same machine and supports Itanium. Here's an old article about it, but they've made some progress since then:

A quick comment to about 64bit platforms from Intel. As I'm sure you're aware, x64 and ia64 (Itanium) are not the same thing -- so if MS VS 2005 is designed only for x64 it won't run on ia64. Confusing but critical.

Unfortunately, itanium is effectively dead in the workstation market.

Hope this helps

Subject: HP Itanium Woes....

Hello Gang,

So, first off, is there a CU Windows List?

My issues right now pertain to Windows, but I'll ask here in case anyone has any thoughts.

So I wrote that I got an HP Integrity rx2600 server with 16GB of RAM and Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition for Itanium processors.

There is no software for it!! NONE!

I need to be able to virtualize and nobody supports an Itamium processor.

VMWare Workstation of Server 2.0 beta dont support it.

Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 has a x64 bit version, but when I try to install it it says "not for Itanium".

There are others like QEMU which I cannot get to work.

HP says that Redhat Enterprise is supported, so is SUSE Enterprise, HP/UX, OpenVMS

But since I am not at Campus anymore I cannot obtain Redhat. I tried Suse Enterprise Trial, but my system does not seem to recognize the DVD (from the EFI-Shell)

Even Java from SUN, I have to compile my own ia-64 version (and I dont own an old copy of Visual Studio 6, just VS 2005 Standard Edition)

Does anyone have any thoughts for me? Not being able to virtualize is really holding up my progress work wise at this point.

Thanks!

Jason
