Hi there! Is the only way to have a Matlab license - is to make a request through a faculty member? How about matlab versions for instructional purposes only? I heard they come out free. Thanks for any info! Acmae
Hi Acmae,I have been using octave instead of Matlab for a long time. I very much recommend using octave. Go with versions > 2.9 as it has lot of new capabilities in terms of plotting with gnuplot etc.,. Even though Version 2.9 is much better compared to 2.1, octave 2.9 scripts could be incompatible with octave 2.1. So keep that in mind if you have a bunch of machines some running octave 2.1 and some running octave 2.9.
BTW, there are some minor incompatibilities between octave and Matlab. So I do not advise using both for the same job. But if you just stick to octave, I think you will enjoy it as much as Matlab.
