Almost everything is better.
Things which are not:
xterm:
Occasionally, parts of the text on an xterm will fail to display.
Clicking on the window will cause the missing text to appear. Setting
"Visual Effects" to "None" makes this problem go away. Too bad. I'm
using the "restricted" nvidia driver.
bitpim:
Easy to install, but it doesn't work with my phone. An earlier version
used to work with the same phone under RHEL. When I connect the phone's
USB cable, I can see /dev/ttyACM0 get created. The perms are OK. If I
try "Detect phone", I get "No phone detected/recognized". If I enter
the settings manually, I get "LG-VX6000 on /dev/ttyACM0: The phone is
not responding while transitioning mode from none to brew". If I click
"Browse" on the "Settings" page, I get:
This port is available and can be selected.
Property Value Description
available True It was possible to open this port
class modem This is a modem connection
description USB modem (/dev/ttyACM0)
device (166, 0)
driver ttyACM
name /dev/ttyACM0 This is the name the port is known to your operating
system as
If I exit from bitpim, a bitpim process is left running.
If I run bitpim as root, "Browse" in "Settings" identifies
"usb::003::013::2" as probably being my phone. However, I get
"LG-VX6000 on usb::003::013::2: The phone is not responding while
transitioning mode from none to brew". Perhaps I should have a "brew".
Samba:
I can print to a Windows printer share, but only using the IP address of
the Windows box (eg. smb://192.168.1.101/renoir). Using the workstation
name (eg. smb://theophilus/renoir) does not work.
K3B:
Needs to be begged to load its saved parameters.
Sound apps (Rhythmbox, Audacity, and Flash) still fight over who gets to
use the sound interface.
Still working on other things. Mostly a pleasant adventure. A slight
amount of disappointment.
