Utilities/EMCS Summer Programming Position

Perfect summer job for a...

Linux/C++ Programmer

The Utilities Department is looking for a C++ programmer to work on an open source implementation of a network security communications protocol. This is a full-time temporary position, starting mid to late May. Experience with network communications, issues surrounding identity, authentication and/or encryption a plus.

About the project...

BACnet is an international standard for Building Automation and Control networks. It is being developed and maintained by ASHRAE (the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers).

BFR is an open source BACnet Firewall/Router written in C++ suitable for embedded devices and small (floppy boot) PC's.

Driven by the integration of access control and life safety integration into building automation, the advent of wide area networks using public networking, among other considerations, the Network Security working group has prepared an extension to BACnet for future publication in the standard. This proposal needs to be thoroughly reviewed, and there's nothing like a working implementation to drive that process.

You will be working directly with the original author of the BFR code base and authors of other open source projects. Your findings and recommendations will be going directly to the working group and will have a pivotal role in the direction of this important addition to the standard. This will also be an important component of the EMCS (Energy Management and Control System) that supervises the building automation equipment on the Cornell campus.
